BTS Tax Operate - Tax Manager (USI)

Role Summary

The Manager will serve as a key engagement management lead across a portfolio of complex U.S. domestic and global tax engagements, with accountability for day-to-day delivery management, governance, execution, and stakeholder communication.

This role will drive engagement planning, operational visibility, issue resolution, and cross-functional coordination across U.S. and global tax compliance and related tax accounting activities to help deliver a consistent, scalable, and high-quality client and internal experience.

Engagement Management and Delivery Governance

  • Serve as a key engagement management lead across U.S. and global tax engagements, bridging tax client service teams, client stakeholders, and local/regional Deloitte teams to support predictable, high-quality delivery.
  • Manage day-to-day engagement governance and project management across the portfolio.
  • Manage contracting and SOW development, including scope and fee management.
  • Build and maintain engagement workplans, service delivery milestones, and governance routines to support disciplined execution.
  • Monitor execution against agreed client service plans and follow through on open items, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Maintain transparency into engagement status through dashboards, reporting packs, and web-based tracking tools or portals.
  • Lead recurring status calls, working sessions, and client readouts, ensuring updates are clear, action-oriented, and decision-useful.
  • Drive issue resolution and risk management by identifying, tracking, and escalating technical, process, data, timing, and scope risks early.
  • Manage engagement economics by organizing staffing plans, tracking budget-to-actuals, forecasting fees, monitoring realization, and communicating variances to engagement leadership.
  • Support invoicing and central billing, including tracking, coordination, and follow-up with project leaders and internal teams as needed.
  • Promote quality and standardization by reinforcing templates, review protocols, documentation requirements, playbooks, and engagement quality controls.
  • U.S. Tax Compliance specific responsibilities:
    • Manage governance and project management for U.S. corporate income tax and investment management tax engagements, including federal and multistate compliance, tax provisions, extensions, quarterly estimates, partnership returns, K-1 preparation and distribution, fund and entity-level reporting, and related supporting activities.
    • Coordinate the end-to-end U.S. compliance process, including document and data requests, workpaper tracking, review readiness, and timely filing deliverables through Deloitte platforms.
    • Support U.S. tax accounting and tax provision deliverables where in scope, coordinating calendars, data flows, and review cycles.
    • Coordinate with service line teams as needed, including SALT, international tax, credits and incentives, and tax controversy.
  • Global Tax Compliance specific responsibilities:
    • Lead governance and project management for global tax compliance engagements and support transparency into the client’s compliance and reporting process through the Deloitte platform.
    • Monitor execution against global client service plans and support consistent delivery across jurisdictions.
    • Manage local country issues promptly and in accordance with engagement communication protocols.
    • Work with local and regional member firms to identify and resolve issues and share insights to improve delivery efficiency.
    • Review engagement status reports delivered to clients on a monthly basis.
    • Lead client conference calls to discuss global compliance and obligation status and maintain strong working relationships with client stakeholders.
    • Coordinate transition activities for global engagements, including web-based platform setup, scope discussions, and delivery tracking.

Transitions, Scope Changes, and Pursuits

  • Lead/Manage onboarding and transition planning for new engagements and major scope changes, including kickoff coordination, scope confirmation, stakeholder mapping, timelines, and roles.
  • Stand up engagement operations, including workflow tracking, deliverable calendars, secure collaboration methods, and intake/checklist processes.
  • Coordinate with Deloitte teams to confirm responsibilities, handoffs, and interfaces across workstreams.
  • Draft or support drafting the Statement of Work, including scope boundaries, assumptions, deliverables, and change control triggers.
  • Review RFPs and support setup of new opportunities in Pursuit Manager for new clients.
  • Review fee inputs provided by local member firms against indicative fees and follow up on questions or assumptions.
  • Prepare the client copy of fee files and assumptions for Senior Manager review.

Client Communication and Stakeholder Management

  • Develop strong working relationships with client tax and finance stakeholders, engagement leaders, and internal teams.
  • Translate complex engagement activity into clear status updates, decisions needed, and actions required for both client and internal audiences.
  • Support effective communication across workstreams to ensure the right information reaches the right stakeholders at the right time.
  • Maintain disciplined follow-up on actions, deliverables, and issue resolution to strengthen trust and visibility.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Coach and develop junior team members through on-the-job guidance, timely feedback, and strong day-to-day support.
  • Create a positive learning culture that encourages accountability, collaboration, professional growth, and operational excellence.
  • Help reinforce consistency, discipline, and strong team practices across the engagement management environment.
  • Influence and collaborate across levels and teams while fostering trust and accountability.

Qualifications / Experience

  • Post-graduation/master’s in business administration preferred.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in engagement management, project management office leadership, tax operations, or related service delivery roles.
  • Experience supporting U.S. corporate income tax compliance, investment management tax compliance, tax accounting/provision, and/or global tax compliance and reporting environments.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex engagements involving planning, staffing, budgeting, status reporting, risk management, technical delivery coordination, and client communications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex topics into clear actions and status updates.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities and workstreams simultaneously.
  • Proven problem-solving mindset, sound judgment, and ability to adapt quickly to changing timelines and scope.
  • Strong technology and reporting skills, including Excel, PowerPoint, and data/reporting tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Alteryx.
  • Familiarity with tax compliance, tax accounting, workflow, and AI-enabled productivity tools is an important capability for this role.
