Senior Analyst – Economics

The Economics research team is part of the Research and Insights (R&I) group. The team comprises individuals with varied subject matter expertise and skill sets that enables members to work independently as well as collaboratively on small and large projects. We are seeking an economist having 3+ years of research experience with strong skills in economic and econometric analysis, business writing, and verbal communication. The individual should be self-motivated and accustomed to working well in a close-knit team.

Work you’ll do

The professional will be expected to support and write thought leadership about the U.S. and global economies and contribute to the development and deployment of the group’s publications.

Thought leadership includes deliverables such as in-depth research reports, client presentations, case studies, articles, and blogs, some of which will likely incorporate results from econometric modeling and time series forecasting. Such research often require knowledge and use of data from government sources (like the U.S. Commerce Department and Bureau of Labor Statistics), data aggregators such as Haver Analytics or Bloomberg, analysts’ reports, government publications, presentations, economic commentaries, and news articles.

The professional will be expected to support development of research ideas, frame hypotheses, analyze and model quantitative and qualitative data, synthesize findings, and demonstrate strong writing, presentation, and communication skills. The professional will work with the India and U.S.-based economists and senior colleagues from Deloitte’s Global Economists Network.

Research responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate sound knowledge of economics, including macroeconomic issues and microeconomic concepts, by delivering thoughtful economic insights. Candidates with limited exposure to the US economy would be expected to ramp-up quickly.
  • Analyze academic literature, analysts’ reports, case studies, and official and private economic data.
  • Present research proposals and findings to senior colleagues in India and the United States.
  • Raise the profile and differentiation of our thought leadership by infusing it with insights derived from sound econometric techniques using statistical software.
  • Work collaboratively with members of the Economics team and other stakeholders (e.g., industry research centers, publishing team) to prepare thought leadership deliverables.
  • Contribute to writing reports targeted at a C-suite audience.
  • Liaise with the India Economics team leader and the U.S.-based research lead to understand, refine, and manage project expectations and priorities.

Requisite core skills:

  • Self-motivated, innovative, and a strong team player.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Sound knowledge of economics, including and not restricted to:
    • Macroeconomic concepts, including open economy macroeconomics.
    • Fiscal and monetary policy and how they work.
  • Ability to research and provide insights on varied economic issues.
  • Familiarity with the U.S. economy and U.S. data sources, experience in using data aggregators such as Haver Analytics, and knowledge of econometric packages such as Eviews is a plus.
  • Solid business writing skills, including the ability to develop an appealing, succinct write-up. A journalistic and narrative style of writing is preferred.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, including presenting/communicating to, and working with, virtual teams.
  • Ability to develop compelling and analytical data visualizations using one or more software tools, such as Excel, Tableau, PowerPoint or others.
  • Broad understanding of key social media platforms is preferable—for instance, Twitter, LinkedIn, and SlideShare. The individual must be savvy and hands-on with some of these platforms.

The R&I group’s mission is to undertake research and analysis to develop compelling and forward-looking perspectives that allow clients to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to “what’s coming next.”

The team plays an integral role in strengthening the firm’s strategic positioning through end-to-end development of high-quality thoughtware published on Deloitte Insights and Deloitte.com. Their work includes:

  • Managing relations with internal stakeholders.
  • Using advanced data science and survey advisory capabilities to strengthen the credibility of insights.
  • Leveraging editorial and visualization capabilities to improve the stickiness of firm thoughtware.
